Mafia is a social deduction game based on asymmetric information. It is often played in groups of about 4–20 people, and it exists in many variations. To play, you must have a Game Master (GM) who understands the rules and guides the game.
The game is divided into two repeating phases: night and day. Players receive different roles through the app, either randomly or chosen in advance by the GM. Each player only knows their own role. Roughly one quarter of the players are mafia (rounded down).
The mafia’s goal is to gain a majority in the village so they outnumber the villagers. The villagers’ goal is the opposite — eliminate all members of the mafia.
A Round of Play: Once all players have received their roles in the app, the GM asks everyone to close their eyes. Night has begun, and all players “sleep” while the GM wakes the roles one by one. Only one role is awake at any time, ensuring no one learns the identities of the others.
The roles are always called in a fixed order: first the mafia, then the doctor, then the police, followed by any additional special roles included in that game session.
Mafia: The GM wakes the mafia. They open their eyes, identify each other, and silently choose a victim. If this player is not protected later in the night, they will die when morning comes. The GM then puts the mafia back to sleep.
Doctor: The GM wakes the doctor, who chooses one person to protect from being killed during the night. After choosing, the doctor sleeps again.
Police: The GM wakes the police officer. They may investigate one player and learn whether this person is mafia or not. Then they return to sleep.
Other Special Roles: If the game uses additional roles, the GM wakes them in their designated order so they can perform their actions. When all roles have acted, the GM wakes the entire village and announces the results of the night.
During the day, all players may speak freely. The village must discuss, accuse, bluff, lie, defend themselves, and eventually decide on one person to eliminate. This vote is the villagers’ main weapon against the mafia.
To survive, the mafia must manipulate the villagers into voting out innocent players. Once a player is voted out, they reveal their role and leave the game. Then night begins again and the cycle repeats.
